The Day in the Life of a Skills Development Facilitator

Ever wondered what it's like to be a Skills Development Facilitator (SDF)? Here’s a glimpse into a typical day in my life at KVR Consulting, where I combine my passion for workforce development and guidance with the intricacies of compliance and training.

As a Skills Development Facilitator and Employment Equity Specialist, my main focus is to ensure that companies remain compliant with regulations and build a skilled, diverse workforce. With over nine years of experience, I navigate the complexities of Employment Equity (EE) and Skills Development (SD), helping businesses meet legislative requirements and implement impactful training initiatives. As I mentioned, “Not one day looks the same, as my role shifts depending on the time of year.”

A Dynamic Work Schedule

During the intense submission period from September to November, we engage in high-pressure work, ensuring that all reporting is accurate and compliant. This is followed by the Skills Development phase from January to April, focusing on meticulous documentation and the implementation of year-round training programs.

My day typically begins with a strong espresso—“a non-negotiable in my house”—after I’ve dropped off my boys at school. Working remotely suits me best, so I start by checking in with clients, following up on outstanding documents, and managing administrative tasks related to training implementation. Meetings—both onsite and remote—take up a large part of my day, where I aim to keep clients supported and on track.

Balancing Act

I strategically organise my calendar to balance deep-focus office days with meeting days. Internally, we hold team meetings, either virtually or onsite, to collaborate and refine our processes. Ultimately, our goal is to empower businesses and individuals through compliance, training, and consistent support. “I personally thrive on problem-solving, staying ahead of industry trends, which allows me to tackle every challenge with a well-researched solution.”

Skills I Bring to the Team

With over eight years of experience in my field, I bring a wealth of knowledge in compliance, training implementation, and workforce transformation. My detail-oriented and proactive nature comes to the forefront during meetings, as I come prepared with research, solutions, and strategic advice. My project management skills enable me to juggle multiple clients and tight deadlines efficiently.

I enjoy training and coaching others, ensuring that knowledge is shared and teams feel empowered.  Digital tools allow me to optimise processes and maintain accuracy in reporting. Ultimately, I thrive in environments where I can make a meaningful impact while helping others grow.

My Journey

Reflecting on my career path, I started as a casual worker at Walton during my studies in 2015. I then transitioned to a large consulting firm in 2016, where I quickly became known as the go-to Employment Equity person. To broaden my experience, I took on various roles, including HR and bookkeeping for my husband’s company. In 2024, I was thrilled to join KVR Consulting, and this journey has been incredibly fulfilling.

After a busy day, I switch gears from work mode to mom mode, keeping up with my two energetic boys and my equally active husband. I love cooking and baking, often experimenting with new recipes, and I frequently help my husband with his business because, as I often joke, “I can’t sit still for too long.”

Whether it's managing compliance or creating culinary masterpieces, my days are packed with activity and purpose. Being a Skills Development Facilitator allows me to blend my professional aspirations with personal joys, making each day uniquely rewarding.
